Twitter user SK_Louie has recently create what may well be the most adorable mod of all time. Now, thanks to him, Wolfenstein 3D players now contain the ability to pet the dogs they often encounter.
In the initial iteration of the game, users were repeatedly attacked by the dogs they encountered, and the only means to an end was to murder them outright. The dogs belonged to the Nazi party, and were surely on the enemy team, but it’s not to say the dogs themselves were harnessing the evil. This mod, appropriately called Return to Castle Woofenstein, and shortened to Woof3D, not only allows players to tenderly pet the dog until they fall asleep, but also eliminates the Nazi enemies entirely.
While the dogs still manage to jump up on players, they’re no longer fueled by malice. Now, players can enter the caste within Wolfenstein without the looming terror brought upon by the Nazis, and the reassurances that the dogs are now their allies. Your weapon is replaced by a hand ready for heaps of petting, rendering the game just about as saccharine as it can ever get.
In a peculiar twist, the dogs can actually still kill the player in their bouts of excited jumping (this is still a game, after all), so SK_Louie recommends players utilize the mod on the hardest difficulty, and enable god mode. The mod is made properly for the original Wolfenstein 3D, meaning that users will need to use DOSBox or a PC running Windows 98 to run it. Using it on DOSBox is fairly simple, with instructions on how to manage it being listed within the mod page.
