The Unreal Engine Marketplace now has a selection of free content from the award-winning game What Remains of Edith Finch. The assets are currently available on the Unreal Engine Marketplace. This content gives developers access to environment models, props, materials, and more. What Remains of Edith Finch, developed by Giant Sparrow and published by Annapurna Interactive, was released in 2017; it took home the award for Best Game at the 2018 BAFTA Awards.
Developers can use the assets from What Remains of Edith Finch free of charge. According to Epic Games, the collection includes “3,000 meshes with unique textures and materials.” In addition, developers can use the game’s main setting, the unique Finch Family Home. Also included in the free content: rustic family kitchen, a misty beach environment, and outdoor wedding and party decorations. The fantasy kingdom, from the haunting Lewis Finch storyline, will also be available. According to The Verge,
Epic is no stranger to releasing assets from its own games for free.n the past, it’s made content available from its Infinity Blade games as well as Paragon available to developers, which joins a large amount of other free content available on its marketplace.
What Remains of Edith Finch follows a woman on a journey through her childhood home. Players learn of the morbid curse plaguing the Finch family which kills all but one family member of a generation. Developer, Giant Sparrow, worked on the game for four years before its release. It went on to take home “Best Game,” the biggest award of the 2018 BAFTAs.
Epic says the What Remains of Edith Finch assets are “the first in a series of new, free content” from “teams across the community.” This hints that more assets will be released in the future. The initiative aims to put Unreal Engine ahead of its competitors — making it a more appealing tool over others.
