‘We Happy Few’ Introduces its Player Characters in a New Trailer

In a new trailer, the creepy indie survival game offered a look at each of We Happy Few‘s playable characters. There are three in total, and they each take up a piece of the game’s overarching plot. The trailer itself is fairly lengthy, and also shows off some more of the game’s story, gameplay, and crafting options.

First off, we’re introduced to Arthur Hastings, who has been around since the first unveiling of We Happy Few. Arthur appears to be the main ‘builder’ of the trio, creating a number of makeshift weapons to beat back the masses of Wellington Wells. Arthur’s story follows his attempts to escape the city via its “Garden district” as he searches for his missing brother.

Next, the trailer takes up the point of view of Sally Boyle. She’s an “experimental chemist” in Wellington Wells, and her gameplay specialty appears to employ more stealth than the other two playable characters. Sally can utilize her syringes, which are presumably filled with the experimental substances she engineers, to strike and take out guards as she sneaks around forbidden areas. In the trailer, the game’s villains also seemed intent on “shutting her down.”

The final playable character is a Scottish veteran named Ollie Starkey, who has apparently refused to take Joy (the drug used in-game to pacify citizens of Wellington Wells) for years. Ollie appears to solve his problems head-on as the bruiser of the group; where he charges into the fray and Sally uses subterfuge, Arther appears to be the crafty middle-ground between the two.

The trailer also suggests that We Happy Few has evolved considerably since being in Early Access. Where before it was heavily built like a survival simulator, it now has more storytelling elements to the world. It’s clearly still made to be a survival RPG, with the crafting and combat options it offers, but it looks like we’ll also be seeing the game’s plot deepen when it launches in full.

We Happy Few is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on August 10.

In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
