Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment’s upcoming third-person shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II released a new trailer today, giving fans a breakdown on gameplay across its multiple modes. Here are all the new details on the game’s story, game modes, progression, and more that the 6-minute-long trailer revealed:
There will be three game modes when the game releases:
- Campaign, which will be a story mode that can be played solo or in three-person co-op.
- Operations. a co-op based mode that emphasizes class-based play and replayability.
- Eternal War, a competitive online PvP mode.
The story of Space Marine II will take place a century after the events of the first game, and will follow a recently-demoted Lieutenant Titus who returns to the Ultramarines and battles a Tyranid invasion with his Battle Brothers Chairon and Gadriel. The game’s unique “swarm technology” will allow for hundreds of real enemies to appear on screen at the same time, as players fight on the planets Kadaku and Avarax, in jungle, metropolis, and other settings. Players will be able to fight in any combination of close quarters and long range combat styles they choose, and the trailer shared a tip that melee finishers will refill a player’s armor. The game will feature iconic weapons from the franchise, including the Chainsword, Melter Rifle, and the Thunderhammer.
Operations mode will feature six classes: Tactical, Assault, Vanguard, Bulwark, Sniper, and Heavy. Operations mode will also feature cosmetic and loadout customization for each class, including distinct perk trees. Some class-specific specialties for Operations were revealed, including the Sniper’s Stealth Cloak, the Vanguard’s Grapnel Launcher, and the Bulwark’s Chapter Banner and Storm Shield. Playing these missions will unlock more cosmetics for a player’s Space Marine, as well as earn them XP and armory data to unlock new class perks and modify weapons.
Eternal War will feature 6v6 matchmaking in arenas inspired by the game’s settings, and rulesets will include Deathmatch, Seize Ground, and Capture and Control. Eternal War matches will also allow players to earn more XP and add more weapons to their arsenal. The game’s creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick teases that more surprises and information on the game will be coming “very soon,” calling today’s trailer “just a taste” of what’s in store. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II is set to release on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on September 9, 2024, with pre-orders of the game allowing players to unlock early access to gameplay four days early.
