If you’re unfamiliar with the title, Where the Bees Make Honey is a puzzle-adventure narrative game that tells a story of a young woman named Sunny. While uncertain about the next steps to take in life, she recalls memories of her youth, dressed as an adorable little bee with one of the greatest gifts of childhood: a highly active imagination. The focus and main theme of this game is nostalgia, and remembering a time when creativity and imagination were possibly the most active. One of the goals for the developer was to capture “that grace period in a childhood where playing dress-up was larger than life and changed the environment around you.”
This game is more for casual gameplay. While there are rotating puzzles, side-scrolling exploration, and giant pumpkins, the project was designed with more of a focus on the narrative as well as the player’s overall experience. Throughout the game, Sunny reflects on her memories and special moments of youth, but through the perspective of an adult. Where the Bees Make Honey tries to remind us of our freedom to dream and express our imagination, something so important no matter how old we are.
