The Saints Row series seems to over. There’s not much you can do when Emperor Zinyak kidnapped the President of his or her cabinet and blew up the Earth, destroying the rest of the Saints as well as 7 billion people. Just because Saints Row is most likely over, that doesn’t mean that Volition can’t make more over-the-top third-person shooters. The supposed follow-up to Saints Row is called Agents of Mayhem and it appears to be just as wacky.
Just like Saints Row, the characters in Agents of Mayhem are also overpowered human/superhero hybrids. One character is Daisy, a “rollerskating derby girl who also happens to carry a massive Gatling gun and swears and drinks like nobody’s business.” There’s Hollywood who is just as the name suggests, a movie star turned real-life action hero similar to Mortal Kombat‘s Johnny Cage. There’s also a nod to Pierce Washington, one of the protagonist’s of Saint Row‘s right-hand men, under the name of Kingpin. His power is pretty dope: he drops a boombox that makes all of the enemies around him dance, presumably to make it easier to kill the enemies surrounding him or it could people like Dub-Step Gun in Saints Row.
“I would be shocked if somebody can’t find a character of our 12 that they can connect to,” Volition lead designer Ryan McCabe said. You can’t design your character like you could in Saints Row, it seem like it will be easy to select a favorite character, one of the best aspects of games that allow you to pick which character you will play as.
“There really isn’t anything else like this in the single-player market right now,” McCabe says. “The fact that we are single-player and are offering people that maybe aren’t able to totally get into a character [in another game] because it’s multiplayer-focused — that’s something I think we can do really well.”
McCabe said that it is important that Volition needed to stick with what it knows.
“There are similarities between Agents of Mayhem and Saints Row,” he says. “We still own the color purple. But what’s important to us at Volition is knowing what we’re good at, where we excel. We make over-the-top, open-world action games with a lot of humor.”
Agents of Mayhem is set for release on August 15 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
