Well isn’t it nice to see an unfinished game released on purpose that isn’t a Ubisoft title. Earlier this week we posted an article talking about an unreleased Saints Row game a Volition employee found for the PSP. Last night during Volition’s Twitch stream, where they showed off the game, Volition announced that they would release the prototype for free.
You can download the ISO of the game over at Unseen64, a website that catalogs and reports on cancelled games. To run the game you will either need a PSP emulator or a modded PSP.
Saints Row: Undercover started as a port of Saints Row 2 but was then made into its own thing after they realized that it wasn’t possible. The game was later cancelled after execs from THQ and Volition felt that the game wasn’t living up to the standards of a Saints Row game.
Volition’s Community Manager Mike Watson said this during the Inside Volition video that announced the discovery.
Developers here have this view that everything needs to be final, pretty, polished, shiny; when the real meat and potatoes is the stuff that isn’t…If framed in the right way that stuff is interesting.
That seems to be what Volition is trying to show. They want to give people a look into the development of a game and show off an as yet unseen member of a popular franchise, which is pretty cool. This is a neat piece of gaming history and I suggest you download it and check it out. Who knows maybe this will motivate other studios to show off their unreleased games.
