Manga publisher VIZ Media has announced that they are partnering with Rose City Games to launch their first original video game and independent publishing program. Today, the pair revealed their first game, The World Next Door, as the first of three games currently in the works.
VIZ Media can be most notably recognized through their familiar properties, including Sailor Moon and One Punch Man. While The World Next Door will be their first independently published game, they have also previously worked on publishing manga adaptations of games, including some in the Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda franchises. Rose City Games has a past of operating as a support studio, and welcome The World Next Door as their first full development project. Their previous work has included aiding in organization and marketing for various game studios and game jams, including the Cartoon Network Game Jam. They are a part of the Portland Independent Game Squad, Pigsquad, and provide their talent to various projects within the industry. With The World Next Door being a first full-time venture for both VIZ Media and Rose City Games, this game appears to be one to keep an eye out for.
The World Next Door has been described by VIZ Media as a narrative-driven game that follows Jun, a rebellious teen girl who inhabits a world parallel to hers filled with magical creatures. The game’s inspiration was taken from the emotional storytelling and exciting action found prominently in both anime and independent games, leaving this team effort in the right hands. The game is set to feature character designs from illustrator Lord Gris.
There is no set release date confirmed yet, but VIZ Media has confirmed this title will be released solely for PC. The other two games they have partnered with Rose City Games to develop have yet to be discussed. Further updates for The World Next Door will be posted on their website and Twitter.
