Last month, independent game developer Studio Rend revealed its first game, Villainy, to the public. With gameplay visuals reminiscent of colorful retro RPGs, but gameplay that is visibly inspired by the massively popular social deduction game Among Us, on the surface, Villainy looks like just another asymmetrical social deception game. Today, however, as of November 26 gamers got a deeper look into the game’s character class system, a feature which took its 2018 predecessor Among Us until 2021 to incorporate with its Engineer, Scientist, and Guardian Angel roles; despite the concept being widely known within the social deduction game that metaphorically gave birth to Among Us: Mafia.
Villainy is your typical social deduction came in many respects. All players are set on the team, however, a certain number of them are villains, while the rest are heroes. The heroes must deduce who in the group are the villainous killers before being entirely wiped out. Where Villainy strays from Among Us and treads deeper towards a more fantastical tone is in the player character class types. November’s official classes overview trailer gives gamers a deeper look into the core gameplay of each class, sharing information on what their differing skills are meant to be used for. Though Villainy showcases a host of ten unique classes in this trailer, three key class types include the secret passageway traveling Thief, the murder rewinding and killer deducing detective, and shapeshifting, ability stealing Jester.
With a cast of ten unique playable class types, each with their own roles and abilities ranging from unmatched team support to silent deception, fans of asymmetrical party games like Among Us and its predecessor Mafia will find the fantasy world inspired roles of Villainy to be a truly exciting addition to the social deduction genre.
Gamers can get their hands on Villainy when it releases to PC via Steam on December 15.
