Valve Adds Joy-Con Support In Recent Steam Client Beta Update

Steam users can now enjoy the wonders of the Joy-Con controller on PC. On August 4, 2022, Valve added Joy-Con support for the Steam client beta in its newest update. Joy-Cons can now be used the same way as one would play on the Nintendo Switch, either individually or in pairs. This new addition will give Steam users a unique experience, Joy-Con drift and all.

This newest update patch notes are rather vague seems to build upon the last, increasing the variety of controllers Steam users can use. Valve introduced support for Nintendo Online Classic controllers on July 27, 2022 including NES, SNES, Sega Genisis, Mega Drive, and N64 controllers. Like the Joy-Cons these controllers are wireless Bluetooth controllers and can be purchased in Nintendo’s store. Along with the new Joy-Con support improved support, the newest update also improves support for the Nintendo classic controllers. Valve also added support for non-Nintendo controllers such as Qanba Obsidian and Dragon Arcade Joysticks and the HORI Fighting Stick mini 4

With the addition of Joy-Cons, and Nintendo’s other classic controllers, it will be interesting to see how Steam games will feel when using them. However, as a reminder Steam users can only access this newest update in the Steam Client Beta. Steam users will have to opt in on the Steam Client Beta within their steam account in order to participate, otherwise users will have to wait for the update to arrive for everyone else. Steam support has an in depth guide on how users can access the Steam Client Beta, here.

Valve continues to do their due-diligence in their updates for the Steam client, adding new features for their users to enjoy. With the inclusion of Joy-Con controllers one can only assume what other hardware will gain support features within the Steam client. Only time will tell.
