After almost a year and a half of being completely shut down due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, some slivers of normal life are beginning to return. In recent months the global population has been able to slowly ease back into their old lifestyles, with some modifications for safety. And, for many gamers around the world, the return of live in-person gaming events marks a huge milestone in the long and arduous transition out of the pandemic.
But, of course, safety comes above all else, and the upcoming Call of Duty League has taken this to heart. An announcement released yesterday evening confirmed that the Call of Duty League esports event will require proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or negative COVID-19 test before attendees can meet in person. This makes Call of Duty League the first major esports event in the United States to require proof of vaccination.
“Our top priority is the health and safety of our fans, staff, and players. With the rising rate of COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County, we are enhancing our safety measures for the Call of Duty League Championship Weekend. Effective immediately, all attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination or, if not fully vaccinated, a negative PCR or antigen test received within 72 hours of the day of your attendance. All attendees must wear a mask during the event, regardless of vaccination status.”
This news comes after the COD League hosted an in-person esports event in Texas, where vaccinations, negative COVID-19 tests, and masks were not required. However, with the COD League being hosted in Los Angeles, California, awareness of safety precautions has shifted to match the Los Angeles demographic. A complete vaccination record or negative COVID-19 test from within the last 72 hours will be required to enter the event. All attendees, regardless of vaccination status or test results, will be required to wear a mask throughout the event as well.
