Counter-Strike’s long life has led to a very profitable player marketplace valued at billions of dollars. However, things have taken a sudden turn recently after a recent update from Valve shifted the exchange rate between various categories of items. With this change, the value of digital items in the game has fallen 48%, causing prices to plummet and erasing roughly $3 billion in value.
What makes these cosmetics so profitable is to think of them like cards from a trading card game. The cosmetics are obtained primarily through cases, like buying packs for a trading card game. When they are opened, the player gets something of a certain rarity. The higher the rarity, the more expensive it can be sold and the more desirable it’ll be.
Prior to the update, the value of rare skins tended to increase steadily over time, resulting in many players spending ludicrous amounts of money to get them. For example, one virtual gun sold for over $1 million.
The change has affected a number of Counter-Strike trader, including young gamers who lost significant amounts of money. One trader, Oscar Stapleton, a 20-year-old in London, lost $270,000 in less than 24 hours the night the update went live. He had $1 million worth of digital items in his inventory. “I’ve had a good past few months,” he said. “This is a shock.”
“This was a complete shock to the community,” said Ethan MacDonald, marketing manager for Pricempire. The analytics company calculates an aggregate market value for the items. “This completely changes the supply of Counter-Strike’s most sought-after and expensive tier of items.”
The update hasn’t affected all of the player base, however. Some view the entire skin economy as a waste of time and money, while others are upset that their “investments” have been shattered without warning.
“So you had all your savings in the counter-strike skins market”
“yes Dave”
“and Valve came in and wiped out 80% of your portfolio with a single update”
“That’s correct, Dave”

“Many investors, traders and players have been selling off a lot of items out of fear that the ‘bubble’ has finally popped,” MacDonald said.
