Whenever the term “semi-legal” comes up in conversation, it’s sure to turn some heads. That’s one of the basic premises for the upcoming game Cloudpunk, by developers ION LANDS. Cloudpunk is set in a cyber punk futuristic city known as Nivalis where players take the on the role of someone named Rania. It’s Rania’s first day on the job for this “semi-legal” courier service. The game describes itself as a narrative driven exploration story that relies on the player traveling and being observant of their surroundings to learn more about the world they’re playing in and the story they’re witnessing.
But the trailer shows that Rania’s first day is just the beginning:
The trailer shows off the cyperpunk city Nivalis where Rania works. She talks about the city streets, the people who live there, and how the city thrives. The trailer shows off some of the gameplay with Rania doing her courier service in a very Bladerunner inspired car, as well as what looks like some walking game play where Rania is highlighted by a small circle around her model. This could be part of the exploration to build the story and setting that ION LANDS had described with the upcoming game.
In the story, Rania will encounter a colourful cast of AI, androids, and unscrupulous humans at each of her stops and at several levels of the city and game. Each character that Rania will meet has their own story and could change the course of the night. The game also features a uniquely simple style of rather angular and geometry-based shapes. It can be compared to that of Lego or Minecraft with its blocky style. But it combines some more traditional style of design as well. This style is considered ‘voxel’ according to ION LAND’S description on the Steam page.
Cloudpunk will be available in 2019 for PC on Steam.
