What a time to be an old game. It seems every other week we’re getting news of a different game getting a patch or update. First it was Diablo 2 getting its first content patch in sixteen years, then Blizzard’s other title Warcraft 3 got an update that fixed various bugs and issues. Where those two differ from the latest game to be brought back into the spotlight is that Two Worlds 2 is getting a pretty hefty story update along with new multiplayer maps.
The announcement was made on the DLC’s website, which gave some information on what players can expect from the DLC. The first is called Call of the Tenebrae and revolves “the Hero’s return to Antaloor, where he witnesses the shocking murder of DarPha.” The Hero will have to face an unknown race of human/rat creatures called “The Chosen”. Looking at the blurb on the website players can look forward to hours of questing, all new villains and bosses along with new weapons and armor to fight them. Among the changes coming to the game is a revamped alchemy, a new soundtrack, and new enemy tactics. As for the second DLC, called Shattered Embrace, as of right now, the only information provided was the name.
With all this new content comes a new engine upgrade, according to the press release, the upgrade “allows for a much higher level of character and landscape detail, an HD-GUI, in addition to tons of in-game achievements, co-op multiplayer, and lots of new in-game features and upgrades.”
Still, it seems odd that a six year old game is releasing story content this long after the game’s initial release; however there is a method to developer Reality Pump’s madness. Other than the announcement of the story, DLC Reality Pump also said that development has begun on a sequel appropriately titled Two World 3, and the DLC is meant to lay the ground work for the next installment. So far the game is only in the concept stages and is scheduled for development over the next thirty-six months.

Two Worlds 2 is an action RPG, similar to the Elder Scrolls series, released back in 2010 by Polish developer Reality Pump. The first game, simply titled Two Worlds, was met with harsh critical reception, whereas the sequel was better received, with Metacritic giving the game seventy-six. However, Two Worlds 2 had some controversy surrounding it review scores, Jim Sterling wrote a piece for Destructoid about the alleged threats of blacklisting if reviewers didn’t give the game the game at least a seven out of ten from publisher Topware.
Two Worlds 2: Call of the Tenebrae is set to release at the end of Q2 this year for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Mac, and Linux.
