Two-Person Game Studio Looks to Kickstarter to Fund Icarus Proudbottom: Starship Captain

Holy Wow Studios, an indie developer behind the Icraus Proudbottom games, is looking to Kickstarter to raise funds for its latest and most ambitious project, Icarus Proudbottom: Starship Captain.

Starship Captain will thrust the player into the captain’s seat of a starship that looks alarmingly like the USS Enterprise from Star Trek. From here, the player has to communicate with his crew members, who are all in control of various functions of the ship, from communications, weapons systems, shields and so on. As this Gif taken from the game’s Kickstarter page shows, your orders can be quite detailed:

This is essentially the heart of the game, as Holy Wow makes abundantly clear:

Icarus Proudbottom: Starship Captain is not an action game, a strategy game, a build-a-ship simulator, or a 4X Space Epic – there are already hundreds of those! It’s a character-driven adventure game & bridge simulator whose goal is to make you feel the pressure and joys of being a captain and communicating with your crew.

To fully fund the game, Holy Wow will need $50,000. So far, 288 backers have collectively pledged $6,864, with 26 days remaining, so the game is off to a good start. Should the game exceed its funding goals, it will allow the developers to improve on the Starship Captain‘s voice work, sound effects and graphics.

Holy Wow are adamant on not setting gameplay funding goals such as multiplayer, as they don’t want to set themselves up for a protracted development time. “We could say “we’ll add multiplayer for $80,000,” but that would be dishonest and risk derailing other parts of the project,” says the studio on its Kickstarter page.

This will be the fourth game in Holy Wow’s Icarus Proudbottom series. The other three, which feature the titular character and his animal sidekicks, include Teaches Typing and World of Typing Weekly, in which the player must type passages as fast as possible, and The Curse of the Chocolate Fountain, in which Icarus Proudbottom must dodge birds while being propelled through the air by his ceaseless defecation. All three games can be played for free.

Holy Wow studios consists of two people, Dan Vecchitto and Jackie Lalli, as well as their two cats, Emilio and Samson.
