Twin Mirror’s First Gameplay Trailer at Paris Games Week

Bandai Namco and Dontnod Entertainment have revealed the first official gameplay trailer for their upcoming title, Twin Mirror. Treating spectators at the Paris Games Week, the trailer includes not only direct gameplay but also developer commentary. Potential players now have a sneak peek into the first part, or episode, and the town settings.

Twin Mirror centers on Samuel, who is returning to his hometown in West Virginia for the funeral of his best friend. What ensues in his return are questions about the blood that ends up on his shirt one night and the investigation that he embarks on. Twin Mirror will have an episodic format with the first episode being named “Lost On Arrival,” a format that is familiar to Dontnod with their development of the Life is Strange franchise. The start of this psychological redemption story introduces main characters and how players’ choices and morals will impact Samuel’s environment. The choices may be related to relationships with town inhabitants or can take place on a more personal level. Check out the official gameplay trailer below:

The developers’ trailer also shows off The Double and the Mind Palace game mechanics. The Double is Sam’s alter ego that represents the other side of his thought processes that our own subconscious is said to possess. In Sam’s case “it represents the self confidence he doesn’t have” and this concept of duality is a theme that is expanded on throughout Twin Mirror.

Mind Palace is Sam’s mental space to take on “memory visualization and deductive reasoning.” Settings of his past are physically reconstructed in his mind and when an issue arises, players can swap Sam out to the real world to collect evidence and other facts to help solve Mind Palace mysteries. This feature acts as interactive memory storage that will challenge Sam with different puzzles and crime scenes that will lead to answers and even more questions.

Twin Mirror  will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2019. Check out our previous discussion on the video diary from the developers explaining Twin Mirror’s film noir roots.
