Dinosaur hunting franchise Turok is officially on its way back. However, the franchise is returning in a completely different, albeit adorable, way than the gritty shooters of the past. The newest entry in the series is titled Turok: Escape from Lost Valley, and is an isometric Chibi style action game that is set to release later this month.
According to the game’s Steam page, player will “wake from a long sleep as Turok and adventure alongside Andar through the dangerous world of the Lost Valley as you seek to find a path home.” On the quest back home, players will encounter a variety of enemies from dinosaurs and bears to other humans. Unlike other games in the series, combat in this new game focuses on the use of the knife and bow instead of guns.
Turok: Escape from Lost Valley is being developed by Pillow Pig Games and is being published by Universal Studios Interactive Entertainment. The game was developed as part of the Universal Gamedev Challenge which ran last year, and saw over 500 indie developers submit entries based on Universal Studios owned IPs. The competition was then narrowed down to six finalists including Turok: Escape from Lost Valley.
Aside from Turok: Escape from Lost Valley, finalist for the Gamedev Challenge included Backpack to the Future, Back to the Future IV – Time Anomalies, Battlestar Galactica Deception, Turok: Legacy of Stone, and Voltron: Cubes of Olkarion. According to IGN, Turok: Escape from Lost Valley placed second overall in the competition, and Pillow Pig Games won $20,000 USD. The grand prize winner was the aforementioned Voltron: Cubes of Olkarion from Gbanga. This resulted in the studio winning $150,000 USD and a one year consulting contract with Universal.
Turok: Escape from Lost Valley is set to release on PC via Steam on July 25. You can check out the trailer for Turok: Escape from Lost Valley below:
