Long-running series are extremely common in gaming. Less common are video game series receiving no new entries before receiving a revival. Developed by Tatsujin and published by Clear River Games AB. Truxton Extreme is true to its name as the most extreme of these examples. With the original game releasing in 1988, a new game taking after the original was the last thing many gamers expected. For those interested in the new game, a release date trailer came out today, showing off the gameplay fans can expect.
The original game saw players piloting a spacecraft with a top-down view, firing on enemies while navigating difficult patterns of attacks. Truxton Extreme picks up right where it left off with a war against invading aliens. The visuals have been updated to work in 3D while preserving the identity of the original designs. According to the Steam page, players will have the chance to experience the game through multiple modes, including an arcade mode reminiscent of the gameplay from the original title.
The main mode of the game with the most substantial differences from the first game is the story mode, where players will level up three pilots as they try to protect the Earth from alien invaders. The story is communicated through manga panels slightly animated as seen halfway through the trailer. While fighting in space, players will also have access to various upgrades for their ship, a staple of the genre. These include a Homing Shot, a Star Mine Shot, and others that go unnamed, but allow for attacks that rival the screen-covering fire the enemies usually boast.
The era of the arcade is nostalgic for many gamers, with many more lamenting that they cannot experience the best that the era had to offer. Truxton Extreme looks to offer a return to that style of game while adding in more features. The game is set to release on July 30th.
