Tripwire Interactive Announces Killing Floor 2

Georgia based studio Tripwire Interactive have announced the sequel to their 2009 smash hit Killing Floor, which will be developed for the PC and SteamOS.

While the first game took place in the streets of Britain, Killing Floor 2 will expand its horizons and take place one month after its predecessor across all of central Europe. The mutated horrors from the first game have run amok across the continent, and players will have to “descend into zed-laden hot zones and exterminate them.”

As befits its status as a sequel to a highly acclaimed game, Killing Floor 2 will boast a number of improvements, one of which is a highly sophisticated and persistent gore system, which will allow players to “send entrails, severed limbs, and blood flying.”

Another improvement will come in the form of weaponry, which will range from improvised weapons to high-powered assault rifles and ominous sounding “Mad Scientist” weapons. Melee combat will also be reworked, allowing a greater amount of player control in the types of moves used.

There will also be six-player co-operative play, although the game can still be played solo. Other notable improvements include the revamping of the perk system, a larger variety of enemies, and improved weapon animations and sound effects. A PC gamer article goes into detail on Tripwire’s obsession with recreating their firearms as accurately as possible.

For those unfamiliar with the game, the first Killing Floor is an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod in which players work together to overcome increasingly difficult waves of mutated monstrosities. Its developer, Tripwire Interactive, also made the Red Orchestra games, which have achieved positive reviews for their realistic, methodical gameplay.

No release date for Killing Floor 2 has been announced yet.
