Spyro the Dragon made its debut back in 1998 for PlayStation 1. He was the feisty purple dragon many fans came to adore. Having sold 5 million copies worldwide, the game was succeeded by two sequels, Ripto’s Rage and Year of the Dragon. Universal Interactive later sold the rights which lead to Activision acquiring the series. While more games were later developed, they did not receive the same critical acclaim as its predecessors. Despite the mixed criticism of the latter installments, Spyro made it through 13 games before it ended up in Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure which was the last series he was featured in back in 2011. Since then, fans last saw Spyro when the first three games were remastered in Spyro Reignited Trilogy which was developed by Toys for Bob back in 2018.
The developers remastered the game from scratch which included the soundtrack and voice lines. Tom Kenny returned to reprise his role as Spyro and Stewart Copland, the composer for the original games returned to remaster the soundtrack. It was first released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One but later released for the Nintendo Switch and PC. Spyro Reignited Trilogy has since sold over 2 million copies worldwide. But after the second round of ports, the franchise went into a dormant state. There has been no news of any future projects for the past 5 years. Recently, Toys for Bob posted on Twitter what well could be a teaser for a possible new project for Spyro.
The tweet depicts a picture with Spyro in the corner with the number 25 over his head. This year will mark the 25th anniversary of Spyro the Dragon, which leads fans to wonder about the fate of the series. Toys for Bob could be hinting at a new game later this year. Their choice of words “big moves and BIG MOOD” certainly leads fans into believing this. While there is still no news confirming a new project, fans can only speculate that the 25th anniversary will bring new installments for Spyro the Dragon.
