Total War: Warhammer Officially Announced

The Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer isn’t just the first Total War game that isn’t rooted in history; it’s also the first Total War game to have the word “War” in its title twice. To that end, the developer has officially declared their next endeavor with an impressive CG trailer:

The trailer depicts a number of factions from the Warhammer Fantasy universe, such as the empire, dwarfs, goblins, and orcs. Publisher SEGA has confirmed to Videogamer that at least three of factions from the universe, the Orcs and Goblins, Dwarfs and Vampire Counts, will be playable. It’ll be hard to believe that other factions such as the empire and elves won’t be revealed as playable as well, though.

A press release from CA describes Total War: Warhammer as a”turn-based campaign game of statecraft & empire building” in which “Gigantic monsters, flying creatures, legendary heroes and storms of magical power take their place on the battlefield, alongside thousands of warriors clashing in real-time tactical battles.”

Speaking to PC Gamer, CA’s creative director said that Warhammer is being developed by a completely separate team from the one that makes the historical Total War games. “The historic thread goes on uninterrupted,” he said when asked if the franchise will be more focused on the fantasy genre. Could CA finally be working on a Total War game based on ancient China?

At any rate, following Total War: Warhammer‘s release date, which hasn’t yet been announced, CA have plans to put out two additional standalone titles based on Warhammer, along with the obligatory bevy of DLC packs.
