You wake up with only a few days worth of food. It’s only been a few weeks after Black Friday, but not the one you’re used to. The streets are barren and the signs of chaos has changed the face of what once was New York. This is setting of the latest development from Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment. Using a realistic timeline, you play as part of an organization called The Division. Your job, save what’s left of our society after a viral attack . This is not just a FPS, but MMORPG unlike most.
From the managing director of Massive Entertainment, David Polfeldt, you’re given the opportunity to explore New York the way you want to. No standard mission to follow or acts that you may be used to from a FPS. No cookie cutter characters to work from as well. A skill tree will allow you to fine tune your operative to fit your play style. The goal of this is to be an RPG first with all the nuances of an FPS with a survivalism core from titles such as Day Z and State of Decay . David Polfeldt stated, “We wanted a lighter game than World of Warcraft. I’m not calling [The Division] an MMO.”
Scavenging for resources, ammo and weapons will become your routine as you explore what’s left of the state. You’re not alone though, at least you don’t have to be. You’ll encounter factions both friendly and dangerous. An extension added will allow tablet users to interact with the game in a guardian manner. This could be anything from armor boosts to healing fallen allies.
Expect to see this across all platforms upon its release which is set for fall of 2014.
