Tokyo Game Show: Bandai Namco’s Sword Art Online and Scarlet Nexus

The Tokyo Game Show chugged along with a panel from Bandai Namco, a Japanese publisher, and developer are best known for their work adapting anime and manga properties into video games. Their latest property was the game Code Vein that is set alongside and in the same universe as the anime God Eater. They are also known for their work with FromSoftware on the Dark Souls series and the upcoming Elden Ring.

Bandai Namco’s panel on the Tokyo Game Show disappointed did not include any new information on their work with the Elden Ring property. Instead, it focused on their Sword Art Online work. The stream started off celebrating the 4 year anniversary of the property, which will include a brand new event for the mobile Sword Art Online game. Later, they also are launching Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam.

Alicization Lycoris is an upcoming DLC that will be unfolding all the way into October with three distinct parts, focusing on the latest story arcs with the Sword art Online property. The DLC is unique in its theme as semi horror DLC instead of the more action-packed and upbeat anime tones from all the other Sword Art Online properties on the market. Alicization Lycoris is available to purchase on the Bandai Namco website or on the various games stores right now. The DLC will be bringing new customization to the field as well with new art assets focusing on the Underworld theme that the DLC is focused on.

Scarlet Nexus is a new upcoming RPG from Bandai Namco. The game also took over the second half of Bandai Namco’s two-hour panel. The game was revealed earlier, but the panel showed off more of the cyberpunk dystopian anime game. Scarlet Nexus will be coming to all the consoles minus the Switch along with a Steam release. The game takes place in a futuristic city called New Himuka, which features a blend of modern Tokyo and brutalist design philosophy and what appears to be the iconic Eiffel Tower.

The player is a unique psionic and will have mind abilities like in other science fiction and will need to combat weird monsters, including walking flowers in a corset. Monsters in the game will be taking inspiration from pop culture and Japanese mythology. Powers in the game include teleportation and telekinesis. The game carries over the same art style that was debuted in Code Vein along with the same melodramatic tonal style that is a staple of Japanese storytelling. Scarlet Nexus is yet to have a release date, but the sections demoed appear to be well polished.

Griffin Gilman: Gaming may very well be half of my personality, so it is only natural that I write about them. The best genre is RPGs, while the best game is Nier Automata. That's not an opinion but a matter of facts.
