A little over a month ago, popular comic book character Spawn was announced as an upcoming playable DLC combatant in the latest iteration of the Mortal Kombat series, Mortal Kombat 11. Recently IGN spoke to Todd McFarlane, the creator of the character, at San Diego Comic-Con. McFarlane spoke a little about the process of how Spawn got tossed into the mix of the MK universe, the back and forth between himself and the game’s creators, as well as his requirements for letting Spawn beat down on Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and the rest of the crew. You can check out the interview below.
According to McFarlane, he was contacted by NetherRealm Studios about the possibility of including Spawn in Mortal Kombat 11. He was on board, albeit with one condition. “This thing needs to be so cool, from a Mortal Kombat fan’s point of view, not a Spawn point of view, you will have done your job and I will be proud of you if somebody downloads this character at some point, doesn’t even know who it is, they go […] ‘but he’s my favorite character to play,'” says McFarlane. He says that if the creators can get to that point with his character, fans Spawn will be happy.
McFarlane also comments on the game itself after viewing gameplay. “It’s super cool now, I mean, they’re doing crazy stuff in that game, right?” McFarlane hopes that Spawn will be a total badass in the game as well. “I want you to get crazy. And the only time that you’re gonna really hear from me is if you weren’t crazy enough. I’m not gonna be happy if you don’t make him super wicked in what he does,” says McFarlane. The team at NetherRealm has been sharing everything with McFarlane, such as dialogue, character design, abilities, and of course, how he’ll kill in the game. It seems that some of the NetherRealm team are Spawn fans themselves. There’s still no word on exactly when Spawn is set to appear in the game, but when he does, fans can be sure that he received McFarlane’s seal of approval.
