During the ongoing Smite Championships in Arlington, Texas, Smite developer Titan Forge Games announced the development of Smite 2, a sequel to Smite which will run alongside the original game. Released 10 years ago to bring a third-person perspective to the MOBA genre, dominated by top-down games like Dota and League of Legends, Smite has gained a modest yet passionate following. Players choose between a selection of 130 gods to control during the game, with over a decade of cosmetic content for the various characters.
Smite was developed using Unreal Engine 3 and was released in 2014, but Smite 2 will be developed in Unreal Engine 5, allowing for significant visual and graphical updates to the game. Given the wealth of content and massive roster of characters, not all content will be available in Smite 2 at launch, although Titan Forge Games confirmed their plans to bring all characters to Smite 2 eventually. Cosmetic content released before Year 11, however, will not be brought to Smite 2, although there are plans to create a Legacy system to honor the collections and achievements of veteran players.
Fans and longtime players of Smite need not worry about losing their Smite progress, as the game will continue to receive updates and continue service after Smite 2 is released. Not only will Smite 2 feature improved graphics, but also a brand new UI, back-end matchmaking system, as well as massive gameplay overhauls, including allowing all characters to build physical or magic damage, something which was previously limited. Moreover, the eSports scene of Smite will receive major changes going into 2024, including shifting to Smite 2, new massive LAN events and changes to eSports management, according to eSports Insider.
