Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales Is Set to Release Next month

CD Projekt Red has announced that single-player RPG Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales will be releasing for PC in October. Although the developer wrapped up its original Witcher trilogy with The Wild Hunt in 2015, they have since returned with Gwent: The Witcher Card Game as an adaptation of the popular mini-game within The Wild Hunt.

CD Projekt Red had hinted a few months ago that more content from The Witcher’s world was coming, before Thronebreaker was confirmed. Thronebreaker was initially announced as a single-player campaign for Gwent before it evolved into a separate game, so its mechanics are not at all surprising.

Thronebreaker is a single player role-playing game set in the world of The Witcher that combines narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics,” CD Projekt Red’s description reads. “The game spins a truly regal tale of Meve, a war-veteran queen of two Northern Realms — Lyria and Rivia. Facing an imminent Nilfgaardian invasion, Meve is forced to once again enter the warpath, and set out on a dark journey of destruction and revenge.”

Throughout the game, players will spend their time gathering resources and expanding their armies as they enter into “epic story battles.” Each battle will be powered by the same skill-based system that will be familiar for those who have played Gwent. CD Projekt Red also promises that during the adventure, players will be able to “explore new and never-before-seen parts of The Witcher world.” This new Thronebreaker campaign will also contain “thought-provoking quests featuring rich, multidimensional characters.” So, if you’ve been experiencing a withdrawal after The Wild Hunt, this may be your chance to dive back in to Geralt’s world, even if it’s not through his eyes anymore.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales will release for the PC via GOG on October 23. A console release is coming a couple of months later, with versions for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 coming on December 4.

In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
