Sometimes, a game is set to come out one year, and it gets delayed until the next. It happens. Developers want to make sure that their game is up to a specific set of standards before they release it. And sometimes that takes a year, or sometimes it takes a lot longer. The first time that developers Whaleo had announced their upcoming title Widower’s Sky was back in 2016, stating that it was roughly 95% done and they were looking for beta testers to get out any of those last minute kinks before launching it. However, what was supposed to only be a few months, ended up turning into 3 years. And after 3 long years, it finally got a release time, and then a release date, and a final trailer before it comes out:
Widower’s Sky is described as a story about a father, his son, and their dog. They’re alone on a world after the wife dies, and they need to traverse the mysterious world to survive. From the trailer, the father explains how the hints were there from the oncoming attack, but no one really believed it, and then it was too late. So their world is filled with machines that are out to get him and what’s left of his family. He’s armed with a crossbow and a dash attack to fight his way out of sticky situations. But other than that, it’s based on wit and strategy.
On the Steam page, the game describes how both the future and the past are juxtaposed through storytelling and the visuals of the game so that they both collide for the climax. Each part is set out in a specific way so certain plot points are revealed at certain times, until everything begins to make sense. The game itself is a mix of combat, survival, puzzles, and narrative, to keep it well balanced and enticing. ANd that the range of the many landscapes, wildlife (both docile and vicious), will keep each area new and unique.
Widower’s Sky is set to come out on September 5, 2019, for PC and iOS Systems. For more information, check out the Steam page.
