One Thousand and One Nights, also commonly referred to as The Arabian Nights, is a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories that have no definitive origin. The impact of these folklores span across countries and cultures and have inspired countless pieces of media since its creation. Most notably, the tales of Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sindbad the Sailor got their starts here. The premise of One Thousand and One Nights is about King Shahryar, who discovers his wife was unfaithful to him and punishes her with death. This leads to him loathing all women, marrying and killing a new wife each day with the goal of eliminating all of the women in the area. Shahrazad, his last wife, has a plan to save herself and the remaining women: a story a day to keep the king entertained. She only begins each story, leaving it incomplete purposely to generate his intrigue. Her stories are so entertaining that King Shahryar can’t help but to keep putting off her execution everyday until he gives up entirely and allows her to live.
Today, at gamescom Opening Night Live, a game that has taken inspiration from this legendary collection of stories was announced. 1001 Threads of Mizan places players in a “sprawling Arabian fantasy world”. Thousands of years ago, jinn and humans lived harmoniously in the shared civilization of Mizan. Human ingenuity and jinn flame brought a technology so powerful it felt like magic; this technology’s name is Mizancraft. Much like many civilizations have fallen victim to in history, a war tears the two species apart, leaving the jinn imprisoned and sent off to live in another realm. This leaves three heroes, each with their own perks and powers, to battle a towering jinn who stands between them and a world shattering tale of betrayal. Using flying carpets to soar through a sky of a realm based off of the Middle East and South Asia, they will uncover the truth of the history of Mizan.This is a 1-3 person cooperative journey where the combination of storytelling, combat, and exploration create an experience as impactful as One Thousand and One Nights.
1001 Threads of Mizan will be available on PlayStation 5, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and Epic Games Store sometime next year.
