The Five Nights at Freddy’s series is turning out to be a horror franchise with a quicker turnaround than the Saw film series.
Less than two months after the release of Five Nights 2, a teaser image for a third game has been posted at developer Scott Cawthorn’s website. Featuring a horrifying image of the titular Freddy animatronic and the simple but effective tagline “I am still here,” it’s pretty obvious that there’s a third Five Nights game in the works.
If that isn’t enough to convince you, the teaser image’s file name reads “fnaf3.jpg” when downloaded.
Finally, according to PC Gamer, an auto response email from Scott Games reads:” Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 is in production! Please do not email me asking any questions about it; NO questions about FNaF3 will be read or answered.” So, um, yeah. We’re definitely getting a third Five Nights at Freddy’s.
The original Five Nights at Freddy’s was released in August last year to critical acclaim, with many praising its minimalist but terrifyingly effective gameplay. Players assume the role of a hapless security guard in a Chuck-E-Cheese-like restaurant featuring animatronic animal friends that entertain the children. Problem is, the animatronic furries turn into mechanized murderers at night, and you the player must keep tabs on them during your shift while preventing them from reaching your security office.
Spurred by the success of the first game, Five Nights‘s sole developer, Scott Cawthorn, worked on a sequel and released it a month earlier than its initial December 2014 release date. The sequel, featuring more scares and animatronics to deal with, was also well received and sold well.
With a third game now on the way, one has to wonder how Cawthorn will freshen up the Five Nights formula. Needless to say, at some point he’ll want to think about giving the players legs to move around with.
