There May Still Be Hope for Telltale’s Final Season of The Walking Dead

Telltale Games abruptly closed its doors to the majority of its staff last week, announcing that the studio would be shutting down for good. It seemed like the studio’s final Walking Dead season would meet premature end, as only a skeleton crew remains at Telltale to finish work on Minecraft: Story Mode. Beyond that, all of Telltale’s in-the-works projects were effectively canceled (although Netflix has states that it still intends to move forward with a Stranger Things game).

Episode 2 of the final season is still scheduled to release tomorrow. Episodes 3 and 4, however, were thrown into doubt. And after Clementine’s voice actress, Melissa Hutchison, shared a heartfelt message over Twitter, it looked unlikely that we’d see the final two episodes of The Walking Dead Game‘s season.

Now, Telltale has shared an update that leaves room for hope. Nothing is certain yet, but the studio announced that “multiple potential partners” had come forward, expressing interest in helping Telltale to release the final episodes. The studio still isn’t making any promises, but hopes to reach a solution that allows them to complete and release episodes 3 and 4 “in some form.” What that form might be, and how likely such a solution really is at this time, are both unknown.

Because The Walking Dead‘s final season was already in progress at the time of Telltale’s closure, fans are understandably curious about its fate. And if the season doesn’t continue, players who paid for the complete season pass will need to be refunded. Telltale’s first season of The Walking Dead catapulted the developer into notoriety, and it would be a shame to see the story unfinished. Nevertheless, the studio has stated that it hopes to “have answers for your other questions soon.”

Time will tell what we see from Telltale. In the meantime, the second episode (“Suffer the Children”) releases tomorrow across all platforms.

Glenn Carreau: Hi! I'm Glenn: recent college grad specializing in interactive arts and media, writer, game creator and connoisseur, pop culture junkie, and semi-professional fan-artist and blogger. In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
