Sony Entertainment looks to have found a new writer for its massively plagued Uncharted film adaptation. Variety reported today that Joe Carnahan will be taking the lead as the new writer. Mr. Carnahan’s previous work includes Smoking’ Aces, The Grey and The A-Team.
Joe Carnahan will not be taking the role as director, as he has done for every movie he has written. Instead, he is working with Will Smith on Bad Boys III, which will take up most of his time. Sony will have to fill his position in order for development of the film to continue.
Sony has been developing the Uncharted movie since 2009. In the seven years that Sony has wanted to do this project, Uncharted, has gone through a plethora of writers, directors and producers. One interesting example is that Sony approached Seth Rogen to write the movie. He decided against the project due to its resemblance to Indiana Jones.
The Uncharted film was originally slated to begin shooting in 2015, but due to complications, production has yet to be accomplished. The fluidity and uncertainty that this picture has experienced led to massive delays. Hopefully this time Sony will get it right under the direction of Carnahan’s writing to release on their goal of June 30, 2017.
To further show Sony’s commitment to pumping out video game inspired multimedia, Naughty Dog’s masterpiece, The Last of Us, is also in pre-development. With the video game industry continuing to boom, more studios will look to have adaptations of their games on the big screen.
Let’s hope they don’t try too many sequels.
