The Top 10 Mobile Games List of August 2019

After the heat of the July list, August came with cooler nights, and some really good mobile games. And a whole plethora of games. As in, one per day, sometimes even two per day. It was… a lot. And after narrowing it down and narrowing it down to eleven games (we’ll get there, don’t worry) to bring to you the Top 10 Mobile Games List of August 2019!

#10. Stretchy Legs

It’s time for your date! But the problem is, your date is far across the other side of the map, while you’re stuck here. In Stretchy Legs, you need to hold down a button to try and stretch your leg as far as you can to reach the next platform in your path. And then, like a rubberband, you make your way towards your date. It’s more than just a guessing game however, as there is a method to your stretching madness, aside from your legs being stretched beyond human capabilities. Simplistic, fun, it’s easy to get lost in the path heading to your sweetheart.

Stretchy Legs is available on iOS and Android Systems for free.

#9. Dead Zed

Let’s head right back to the arcade attached to the bowling alley, because Dead Zed brings the arcade style first person shooting to your phone. As the player, it’s your job to protect the town, city, or wherever you move to next, from the hordes of zombies that want to eat your brains out. You get a limited amount of resources each round, but the zombies keep increasing. Look down the scope of any of your firearms and take them out before they get past your line of sight and start eating your friends.

Dead Zed is available on iOS and Android Systems for free.

#8. Telling Lies

Telling Lies is one of the big resurfaces of live-action video games, using actors instead of voice actors. We’ve seen this, somewhat, before in games like Simulacra about the horror phone that tries to steal your friend? Well, luckily, this one has no creepy phone take-overs and instead focuses on the people that you watch. Uncover secrets and answers by watching videos through specific keywords you use on a browser. Learn what happened to each person through their side of a video conversation, and finally release it to the public. From there, the repercussions and consequences of your actions begin to show. Intimate, personal, and human, this is one where paying attention is fully required.

Telling Lies is available on iOS Systems only for $6.99 USD.

#7. Spy Tactics

One step forward, be sneaky, kill a guy, take a few steps back, and suddenly your trapped. Spy Tactics is one of the most intense strategy games I’ve come across while making these lists. It requires thoughtful planning before you even make your first move. Getting through each level requires a massive amount of espionage of collect keys, briefcases, and any information that you need for your job. Get through the whole level without getting spotted, and you get the information to uncover some mysteries. Get spotted and, well, you need to start over. Strategy at some of its finest, this is one to work your planning.

Spy Tactics is available on iOS and Android Systems for free.

#6. Pokemon Masters

It’s a whole new Pokemon adventure! Pokemon Masters brings back the cast and crew of their previous titles (all the way back to Red and Blue), as well as bringing in some new faces. Explore the all new Pasio Island to fight your way through the Pokemon Masters League! Do battle in a new 3v3 style against several opponents. Don’t worry, you get your own teammates to help you along the way. Each person only gets one Pokemon to battle with, so choose wisely to outwit your opponents in what powers are effective against them. With new techniques and classic moves, become the next Pokemon Master.

Pokemon Masters is available on iOS and Android Systems for free.

#5. Path to Giants

Like finding treasure? Like puzzles? Like three really cute protagonists? Then Path to Giants is right up your mountain side because that’s what it brings to the table. In this serene puzzle game, take control of three explorers who have the three keys to find a long lost treasure. Use each other to go up or down platforms to figure out the proper path to solve the puzzle. Along the way, you can collect treasures that reveal a little bit more about the area that you’re exploring. Explore over 50 puzzles to find your way to the lost treasure and claim your rewards. Charming, calm, and beautiful, it’ll warm your heart and fry your brain, despite it being set in the chilly mountains.

Path to Giants is available on iOS only for $3.99 USD.

#4. Mines of Immortia

Mines of Immortia came as a welcomed breath of fresh air as it showed up as a text adventure in classic Dungeon’s and Dragons fashion. Or, in the style of Choose Your Own Adventure books (those were great, bring them back). As the player, you get to choose how you want to go about on your adventure. Are you a fighter? A wizard? Or not a brown-noser. You’re given a task to go into the mines on the outskirts of town, and from then on out, the adventure is yours to control. Just… don’t die when the mine floors collapse beneath you, because then you have to start the adventure over again! And this time, you can make different choices, or the same ones to try and get back to where you were before. As long as you have the luck with the dice, you can hopefully find yourself saving the boy, and maybe saving even more.

Mines of Immortia is available on iOS and Android Systems for free.

#3. Dead Cells

Having covered Dead Cells back when it was announced for mobile devices, you can imagine the delight when it finally came out.. And finally getting it into the palm of my hands, it was still just as fun and as difficult as I remember. In this Metroidvania style game, make your way through an ever changing castle to discover what happened to the island that it’s on. Each death brings a new path that you can take and discover new things, or some ridiculously fun bosses to fight against. Well worth the wait, and well worth the fun, this is one that will keep coming back (from the dead!).

Dead Cells is available on iOS only for $7.99 USD.

#2. They Breathe

They Breathe has been a long time indie game favourite since 2014. And now it’s finally out for mobile devices. Take the plunge into the waters of the flooded and make your way to the bottom to uncover the tragedy that happened. The game is only 30 minutes long, roughly, but it’s something that will stick with you for quite some time (5 years for me, having played it back in 2014. Longer now that I’ve re-lived it once more). Because even when you think you’re getting close to the bottom, it just keeps going. And the horrors that lie further and further into the depths will only make your skin crawl. Dive in, go deep, hold your breath, and hope they don’t catch up to you.

They Breathe is available on iOS and Android Systems for $1.99 USD.

#1. Journey AND Gris

This is the first time that there’s been a two-way tie in these monthly mobile lists. And this was a decision that was surprisingly easy to make once thought over. That being, Journey and Gris, are both similar in aspects. Both cover a deep and emotional connection with the player, with different subjects. But to put into perspective, let’s talk about each one individually.

Journey is a long time critically acclaimed narrative driven game by thatgamecompany. It tells the story of a young scarf creature that awakes in the sands of the desert, with only a single mountain peak in view. Along the way, they uncover creatures in the sand, long lost symbols, and learn the history of their world through their ancestors. They only know of the mountain, and only know that the answer lies at the peak. It’s a story of identity, of death and rebirth, that goes beyond words to speak of their kinds fortunes and inevitable greed and fall. The scenes go from the golden sands of the desert, to the deep underground, to the wintery cold of the mountains. It’s captivating, beautiful, and since its release in 2012, it has been my most recommended game of all time. And now that it’s out for mobile devices, it was the first thought in my head, to put it up for one of the most recommended mobile games of August.

Journey is available on iOS only for $4.99 USD.

Gris, on the other hand, is a story of a young woman dealing with loss. We see as she loses her voice, and her world crumbles around her. From here, she has to make her way back to get back what she lost. The game takes on a visual representation of the five stages of grief, through color, through music, through bouts of storms and elements. During each stage, she learns a new move that helps her push through. In Anger, she learns to be grounded, instead of being thrown by the winds. In Depression, she learns how to swim, instead of letting herself drown. Everything is hand painted in watercolors and it makes the world as stunning as it possibly can be. Much like Journey, it too is a wordless narrative driven story, however this one shows a woman’s progress in health, and learns that sometimes your worst enemy goes deeper than you hoped. Gris has shown a level of understanding on a personal level of dealing with grief, and it’s another game that I will hold near and dear. For that, it is the other most recommended game mobile game of August.

Gris is available on iOS only for $4.99 USD.
