A new look into Metro 2039 was revealed at PlayStation’s State of Play 2026 today. The trailer showcases PS5 Pro gameplay for the newest addition to the Metro franchise.
A snippet of The Stranger searching for a Novoreich fortress located inside a nearby dam leads to him entering a dilapidated apartment building. As he walks, a tool that detects radiation can be heard clicking, alerting him of the residual dangers poisoning the world around him. Also noticeable in the footage is the iconic watch that fans will recognize straight away. It works in real time and alerts The Stranger when he needs to replace his mask filter, which he is shown doing.
While looking around, the protagonist can be seen using a UV light to uncover hidden clues along a wall. The environment is dark, the only sounds are the mysterious creaking down the corridors and the sound of broken glass being stepped on. In the darker areas where sunlight doesn’t reach, a lighter can be used to guide the way.
The Stranger hears others roaming around in the apartment building with him, which he follows, leading to a shootout. The close quarter combat feels personal and leaves little space to hide, making getting the right angle by leaning essential to catch an enemy off guard. The way the enemies can be approached is up to players, as the weaponry available can be utilized for different scenarios. Bombs can be used to make an explosive surprise, Molotovs can be used to clear entire rooms, and guns picked up from the deceased scattered about can be used for more accurate eliminations. Some of the most notable among the firearms are a Shatun rifle for silent headshots and a Duplet shotgun that delivers killing blows.
The trailer ends with The Stranger clearing out the building and exiting via a zipline that had already been set in place to make traversing the map quicker for those brave enough to step outside into the wrecked city of Moscow.
