According to NME.com, The Smiths have partnered up with activist animal rights group PETA to make and distribute a game heavily influenced by their iconic “Meat is Murder” song. The arcade-style game is called The Beautiful Creature Must Die and is quite the challenge as players are forced to save all animals in 4 separate quadrants
The game was made in collaboration with This Is Pop and is set to the tune of an 8-Bit version of The Smiths’ 1985 classic hit. The visuals are quite pleasing as there is a spectrum of colors and it is fun as there is much replay value to see just how many animals you can save.
Morrissey said in a press conference earlier:
This game is the biggest social crusade of all, as we safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression. You don’t get that from Pokémon Go.
It seems the hope is for the game to gain immense public traction and hold the attention of players young and old to further The Smiths and PETA’s message. The game does convey a strong sense of realism as the visuals are very gory and forces the player to at least think about their next meal while they play.
Video Games have more power than ever as they will continue to be media platforms for causes and allow organizations like PETA to show the public, in a more attention grabbing way, their message and cause. It is wonderful to see that noble causes will start to become more mainstream in video games worldwide.
Happy Saving.
