The recently announced expansion pack for The Sims 4 is giving players a chance to become a landlord. As all expansion packs do, the upcoming one, titled For Rent, adds a new main gameplay aspect: becoming a property manager.
As per EA’s blog post and trailer announcing For Rent, Sims will be able to take on the role of property owner. From there, they can either choose to live among their tenants, or live in a separate residence while still gaining income. Either way, property owners must take care to keep their tenants satisfied through Unit Ratings, or else the tenants might cause a Tenant Revolt.
The pack also adds a new lot type: Residential Rentals. Lots with this type will allow Sims to become property owners for that lot. It can be a fully renovated house with a spare bedroom to rent, an apartment complex, or simply a room with the basics.
Sims living in Residential Rentals will be prone to both good relationships with their neighbors and gossiping about them. Sims will be able to participate in bonding activities like potlucks and community events, while also eavesdropping on their neighbors to learn their secrets. If a player doesn’t mind breaking the nonexistent laws in The Sims 4, Sims can also burst into their neighbors’ homes to snoop for secrets.
For Rent also offers a brand new world perfect for players looking to start getting into its gameplay aspect. Tomarang has a community garden, Spirit House, animal sanctuary and even a Night Market to be involved in the residents’ lives. The Night Market seems to work similarly to that of the food stalls and festivals that debuted in City Living where Sims will be able to learn recipes exclusive to the market and participate in activities and games.
Of course, the aspect Simmers are most looking forward to is what appears to be a new way to kill–well, have your Sims “mysteriously” die. Briefly shown in the For Rent trailer is a strange mold growing on the floor of a dirty bathroom. A resident becomes infected by it, turning stone gray with green blisters before falling over. While it’s not good practice to accidentally murder your tenants, the mold death adds a new quirk to the absurdity that is The Sims 4.
The Sims 4: For Rent will be available on December 7, 2023 on PC, Mac, Xbox and PlayStation systems.
