With every new adventure game comes a new protagonist, complete with a fresh design to, in the best cases, make them appealing and visually distinct. In the case of Waltz & Jam, two new characters are introduced, a soul and a puppy spirit, both of whom the title is named after. The game recently received a trailer from developer and publisher Flyway Games. This new trailer features both an animated introduction to the world and characters along with moments that showcase the adventure gameplay segments.
The trailer opens with a look over a desolate land quickly interrupted by a portal shooting out the main character, Waltz. The soul is quickly united with the game’s companion character, Jam, and the two establish a fast bond. Working together, they escape a group of monsters and find themselves before the gates of the game’s seven worlds, which, according to the Steam page, are based on seven deadly sins. The trailer then shifts to an artistic depiction of some of the many threats from each area in a way that resembled paper cut-outs. These threats include a wolf-man with a whip, a fiery giant figure, and blocky dark enemy.
The second half of the trailer focuses on the gameplay, which sees Waltz and Jam combining their abilities to work their way around enemies, obstacles, and puzzles. This includes advanced platforming that has players traveling up the sides of moving blocks and timing their jumps to avoid jets of lava. The last few moments see the duo take on the game’s bosses, which are greater challenges that require learning the boss’s attack pattern and surviving in arena’s that play to the enemies’ strengths.
The artistic direction of the trailer has earned much praise in the YouTube comment section, sparking interest in the mechanics shown off later on. Waltz & Jam is coming soon to PC.
