The Mega Sg: Analogue’s Retro Sega Console

Sega fans finally have an equivalent to the Super Nt from the same company who produced it, Analogue. Announced on October 16, the console will work similarly to the Super Nt but will be “compatible with the 2,180+ Sega Genesis, Mega Drive and Master System game cartridge library”. The Mega Sg, like the Super Nt, is not a console that emulates older hardware. Instead it is simulated on the Altera Cyclone V, a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), for maximum accuracy. This accuracy allows the Mega Sg to operate nearly identical to the original hardware that it is meant to be simulating.

A wireless controller is available for use with the console at $24.99, for sale in both black and white. The original Master System, Mega Drive and Genesis controllers are also all compatible for those who are interested in using those. The console is region free, allowing games that would have otherwise been region locked to be played. There are plans to add support to more consoles such as the Mark III, Game Gear, Sega MyCard, SG1000/1000II, and SC-3000 by selling adapters for each respective console.

The console also has options for scanlines, options for scaling, and allows for horizontal and vertical stretching. There are four different versions of the Mega Sg, and each are different visually but all share the same features. You can purchase any of these just as long as you are willing to shell out $189.99. The console will also come with the Master System adapter, HDMI cable, USB cable, and worldwide USB power supply in the package. The console has a headphone jack in it, which is interesting enough to note.

You can read all the details on the Mega Sg on Analogue’s offical website here. The Mega Sg and its controllers can be preordered right now, but it will not ship until April 2019.
