Of all their announcements at E3 2015, one of Nintendo’s more appreciated reveals was that of The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes for the 3DS. A fair deal of the game has been shown since then, but the release date has only just recently been revealed. Players will be able to get their hands on the game this fall, on October 23rd.
Tri Force Heroes’ primary draw is its design around the presence of three heroes at once. This gameplay hearkens back to the Gameboy Advance games, The Legend of Zelda: The Four Sword which put one to four players in control of a total of four incarnations of Link. A single player could also play solo while controlling all four Links at once. Tri Force Heroes functions very similarly, but the change from four to three Links might seem like a downgrade.
Differentiating itself from its predecessor, Tri Force Heroes brings more to the table. Firstly, each of the three Links feature different pros and cons and must utilize their strengths in tandem to complete the dungeons. Also new is the totem mechanic. The totem is exactly what it sounds like: all three Links stack up like a totem pole in order to reach new areas and interact with objects that would otherwise lie out of reach.
Players will have the option to play locally with their friends via download play, meaning only one of the three people needs to own the game. Online multiplayer requires every player owns the game, but is nonetheless available as an option.
When it comes to the 3DS, The Legend of Zelda series is a sturdy pillar of quality, selling millions of copies and pleasing even more players, rivaled only by the likes of Pokemon and Super Smash Bros. 3DS. If the trend is to continue, expect this game to excel, and get excited to play it come this October 23rd.
