Recently, Bloomberg reported that smaller Sony studios began to remake the popular The Last of Us for the PS5. Originally, the smaller Sony studio Visual Arts Service Group wanted to revitalize some of the Sony’s most loved game franchises. In the past, the studio contributed to games like Spider-Man and Uncharted, but leaders in the studio wanted to start taking more initiative for games. However, after some issues, the game will now be developed by the original developers Naughty Dog who are also owned by Sony.
The Last of Us developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony as an exclusive series for the system was released on the PS3 in 2013. The action adventure game follows the story a smuggler named Joel who must help a young girl named Ellie cross a post-apocalyptic United States to escape humans and animals that are infected by a strain of Cordyceps fungus which is actually a real disease. However, the disease in the game is caused by a mutated form of this strain causing humans and other animals to want to attack and spread the illness.
The remastered version of the game was released in 2014 on the PS4, and last year, the award winning The Last of Us Part II was released following some delays due to covid-19. Over the course of the opening weekend, the game sold over 4 million copies. It has received several awards including Game of the Year with Game Informer naming it a “defining experience” game of the generation.
While the remake has not yet been confirmed, fans can hope that Naughty Dog is planning to bring a fan-favorite game into the new console generation. There is not a lot of information regarding the updated version, but players can assume that similarly to other remakes for the PS5 will feature haptic feedback adaptations, improved graphics, faster frame rates, and shorter loading times.
