The Last of Us Online Game Canceled Merely 24 Hours Before Public Release

In recent interview, Vinit Agarwal, the director of The Last of Us Online game, Factions, has come out and spoken about the game’s cancellation, which took place back in 2023, and caused Naughty Dog to shift back to focusing on single-player games. He said the reason behind the game’s cancellation was due to low spending in multiplayer games in the last couple of years, which caused studios to reduce their projects. In the end, the studio had to make a decision on whether to go forward with Neil Drunkmann’s new game, which is a single-player game for which the studio is mainly known, or continue on with the experimental game. And in the end, the game he and his team had been working on for the past 7 years was unfortunately canceled 24 hours before it was to be shown to the public.

Vinit Agarwal, the director of the game, went on to talk about many things that went on during the game’s development cycle. He brought up the gaming industry boom during COVID, and how that led to a significant boost in online games in 2020. Because of this, Sony and other studios, “decided to put a lot of money into online gaming.” He goes on to state that this is the reason the Last of Us online game was able to secure funding, “the game was doing really, really well internally” with the team developing it to almost “80% completion”, it was “very close to done.”

The director then goes on to talk about how he had spent 7 years developing the game and that it was a “Devastating moment” for him. The worst part was that, even though he was the game’s director, he learned of the game’s cancellation “24 hours before it was announced to the public.”

The Last of Us Online game was canceled back in 2023,‌ which shocked the world, since the franchise is a juggernaut for Sony and Naughty Dog.
