Naughty Dog’s PlayStation 3-exclusive juggernaut The Last of Us has surpassed 6 million copies sold worldwide, according to a blog post on the studio’s website that also detailed its plans for the upcoming GDC. This makes it the third highest selling game for the PS3 of all time, bested only by Gran Turismo 5 and last year’s Grand Theft Auto V, both of which have sold 10.6 million and 16.8 million copies respectively.
This latest development is just the latest in a tidal wave of good news for the post-apocalyptic action- adventure game. The recent BAFTA Games Awards in London bestowed four awards upon The Last of Us: Action & Adventure, Audio Achievement, Best Story, and perhaps most notably, Best Game. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences also recently named the game as its 2013 game of the year. The game has an extremely rare Metacritic score of 95/100.
Also indicative of the game’s prominence is the recent news of a film adaptation of the game being greenlit by Sony. The adaptation will be written by the game’s very own creative director and writer Neil Druckmann, with Sam Raimi’s production company Ghost House Pictures set to produce and Screen Gems handling distribution.
The news is sure to further fuel speculation on Naughty Dog’s plans to make a sequel. Druckmann previously hosted a Reddit Ask Me Anything session in which he said that the chances were “50/50.” Prior to the release of the game’s new single player DLC, Left Behind, Druckmann stated that the team was in the process of brainstorming ideas for Naughty Dog’s next project: “To be honest, some of them are sequel ideas, and some of them are brand new IP–we’ve spent the last few weeks brainstorming new IP. So we have to get some good steps and see… It’s kind of like how we approached Left Behind. Can we tell people a story that’s really worth telling, and that’s not repeating itself? And if we can’t, where can we get inspired–what is something that’s really going to challenge us, and push storytelling in this medium forward?”
Released on June 14, 2013, The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States crawling with infected zombies, and depicts the story of survival of its two protagonists, Joel and Ellie. At the time of its release, it was the fastest selling PS3 game of 2013 prior to the release of Grand Theft Auto V.
A feature-length documentary on the making of The Last of Us was released in February this year, and can be viewed below:
