The History of an Indie Title

Yep. That’s retro alright.

History of the Demon Girl, an ultra-indie retro-runner by Silhouette Games (solo dev and former Square Enix staffer Danny Mastrangelo) finally saw the light of day in the form of a demo this week. The four-level demo shows off the initial intro cutscene, three levels of gameplay, and a “break round”. While the gameplay itself may be familiar, the spot-on retro-treatment and sense of humor earn the game a look.

If you don’t follow indie games, you may find yourself squinting at the screen and wondering why titles like this are news– after all, if you’re used to the latest console shooter or big-budget triple-A title, games like this may seem a pointless waste of time. But just like their film counterparts, indie titles are the opportunity for (usually) a single developer to deliver on a single vision by themselves, through sheer force of will. It’s very likely that the single indie developer will have put more blood, sweat, and tears into a simple indie title than any other single person working on a triple-A title.
