Back at E3 2019, Nintendo unveiled a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailer showcasing their next round of DLC characters. The new crew included The Hero from Dragon Quest, who was set to release sometime this summer. No specific date was announced, but it appears that Hero may be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sooner rather than later.
Earlier this week, Nintendo of America uploaded a video advertising new content coming to the Nintendo Switch throughout the rest of this month. Originally, the video was titled “Nintendo Switch – Fan-Favorites & Newest Releases – July.” In addition to new games such as Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the video included Hero’s arrival to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo quickly changed the title to say “Summer” instead of July, but not before many fans caught onto the subtle tease.
The inclusion of “July” in the video’s title may have been a mistake from the start, but it still seems somewhat intentional, especially considering everything else in the video (Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Fortnite Season 9) are all available this month.
The last time a DLC character was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate—Joker from Persona 5—Nintendo never announced a specific release date. Instead, they released a video about Joker’s capabilities in the game day before he was made available for purchase. Though that one-day time frame of has already passed since the video featuring Hero went up, he could still be coming out by the end of the month as the video first suggested.
Following Hero, the next DLC characters coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are Banjo & Kazooie from their franchise of the same name. They’re set to release sometime in the fall.
DLC characters can be purchased individually for $5.99 USD each in a “Challenger’s Pack,” which includes a new stage and music in addition to the actual character. Nintendo also offers a “Fighter’s Pass” for $24.99 USD, which players can purchase to receive all new DLC characters as they release.
