This should come as no surprise but it looks like people really love playing through the older Final Fantasy titles, us included. Square Enix has just revealed that the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster titles have now sold more than three million units worldwide, an incredibly impressive feat for titles that launched beginning in 2021, and also speaks volumes to the swaying power that the older entries still have within the video game community. Of course, newer fans of the series more than likely played these titles for the first time with the Pixel Remaster series, but the storytelling, art style, and excellent JRPG mechanics that were initially introduced way back in 1987 are all still intact and hold a special place in the heart of the video game community.
It also helps that the entire Pixel Remaster series was ported over to the PlayStation 4 in February earlier this year. This in turn also means that the titles are also available on the PlayStation 5 due to backwards compatibility. The Pixel Remaster was initially released starting in 2021 for the PC, iOS, Android, and the Nintendo Switch. Square Enix decided to release the first three entries, Final Fantasy I, II, and III all at once in July 2021, while Final Fantasy IV was released in September 2021.
Final Fantasy V was then released just a couple of months later in November. The series concluded with Final Fantasy VI which was released in February 2022. Square Enix did not offer a sales comparison between all six titles, which is a shame as it would have been interesting to see which entry garnered the most revenue. Regardless, all of the titles from the Pixel Remaster are worth the time of any and all RPG fans, as it takes the classic turn-based/Action Time Battle system and brings it up to speed for the modern age.
