The Fall, Over the Moon’s well-received story-driven sidescroller, has made the transition from PCs to the console market with its release on the Wii U download service.
The Wii U hasn’t exactly received overwhelming amount of support since its release, especially not from the indie scene. Though there have been a few stand-out titles released for the platform, with bigger indie titles like The Cave and Stick It To The Man finding the console to be a great home, many developers have left the quirky console alone, not daring to brave its comparatively empty waters.
Over the Moon is not one of these developers.
The Fall was well received when it was released on PC/Mac/Linux when it was first released some time back, and now Over the Moon is bringing their Metroid-inspired tale of a suit AI desperately trying to save her pilot to the Wii U.
Why the Wii U? Surely the title would see more success elsewhere, right? Not so, claims John Warner, founder of Over the Moon. “They [the Wii U community] showed us overwhelming support during our Kickstarter campaign, so we’re excited to see how well the game is received. We already owe a large part of our success thus far to the Wii U community.”
This is a great reason to support the Wii U, and the console could desperately use it. Despite the console’s string of stellar first-party titles from Nintendo and a number of interesting exclusives from other developers, overall support for the Wii U thus far in its life has been lacking. The Fall is unlikely to be the last indie title to make the transition, but at this point in the console’s life every little bit helps, and having a strong story-driven adventure like The Fall available will do that.
Though The Fall has been criticized somewhat for its short duration (only around 3 1/2 hours) many reviewers have agreed that the game’s atmosphere and story are more than worth experiencing. With a mix of darkness and occasional humor, the story explores a lot of psychological elements from the viewpoint of the suit’s AI as she tries desperately to save the individual inside.
What are you waiting for? The Fall is out now for your Wii U. If you don’t own a Wii U, you can also find the game on Steam.
