It’s been exactly one year since Tom Clancy’s The Division launched in March 2016, dropping thousands of players into a post-apocalyptic New York landscape ravaged by disease and constant firefights between hostile factions. To kick off the game’s second year, developer Massive Entertainment and publisher Ubisoft have announced an anniversary celebration packed with in-game rewards for players.
The event will last one week, from today (March 9) to March 16, and gives players 200 premium credits to spend in the game, as well as a premium celebration emote. Additionally, from March 9-11, players will receive a 2x multiplier on high-value target rewards, and in an event on March 11, players will get a 2x multiplier on field proficiency caches.
These free gifts for players come in a “spirit of generosity towards players” according to Massive Entertainment Creative Director Julian Gerighty, who said in an interview with the official UbiBlog that he’s been surprised by the passion, dedication, and connectedness of The Division‘s playerbase in the game’s first year of release.
In the blog post, Gerighty also talks about plans for Year Two of content for The Division, which will be free for all players and will come in in the form of two separate expansions released during the year.
The first expansion will be based on an event system, driving players to specific activities that will feature new modifiers and cosmetic items unique to that specific event. This expansion is also planned to include a loadout feature, which has been long requested by fans of the game, to allow players to quickly switch between gear sets depending on the scenario. There will also be a new system to track players’ “feats”, which Gerighty says are basically “Division achievements”, to reward players for both long- and short-term activities within the game.
The second expansion is currently too far in the future for the team to comment on, although Gerighty does state that it will be more “content-focused”. He continues that, while there will likely not be any new story missions due to the trickiness of making that fit within the RPG aspects of the game, they are “definitely looking at” including narrative content in the update.
No hard information is given as to whether players will see a raised level cap or an expanded map space in year two of The Division.
The Division is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
