Following the success of House of Ashes, the fourth installment of The Dark Pictures Anthology has been displayed in a stunning new trailer. The Devil in Me is the next game in the series developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. In this game, a documentary film crew has been invited to a modern-day replica of the home of America’s first serial killer. An invitation to H.H. Holmes’ “Murder Castle” is too good of an opportunity for the crew to pass up, but they slowly discover they are being watched upon arrival.
This new story trailer gives off a Saw vibe and presents viewers with a glimpse of the gruesome traps featured. According to Bandai Namco, players must “escape the torturous creations of an evil monster who is hellbent on becoming America’s deadliest serial killer and survive elaborate ‘killing rooms’ where your own death is by the killer’s design.” The Devil in Me will star Irish actress Jessie Buckley as the investigative journalist Kate Wilder who will be brought to life with Buckley’s voice and appearance. Elliot Page had the similar task of bringing the character Jodie Holmes to life in the interactive drama Beyond: Two Souls by Quantic Dream. Kate Wilder has been mentioned in a previous installment of The Dark Pictures Anthology, but The Devil in Me marks her first appearance as a protagonist and playable character.
Along with Kate Wilder playing a major role, The Devil in Me will include new features and Easter eggs. For example, this will be the first game in the anthology to include character inventory, tool-based puzzles, and expanded movement actions such as “run,” “jump,” and “climb.” The title of the game is a reference to the real H.H. Holmes, as he once claimed that he was possessed by Satan and “born with the devil in me.” Perhaps more Easter eggs will be discovered once the game is released.
The Devil in Me will serve as the finale for the first season of The Dark Pictures Anthology. It will be released this fall on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
