Many successful games throughout the years have been funded through Kickstarter, with the most successful usually having a more popular pre-existing media that they are based on. Last month, WeirdCo with the support of CD Project Red launched a Kickstarter for the Cyberpunk series which would bring a playable TCG to the series. Since then, the project has been met with overwhelming support, blowing past its goal shortly after being launched. Now that the campaign is nearing its end, it has become the single most funded project on Kickstarter of all time, surpassing the original record by over 50 percent.
The Kickstarter for the TCG includes multiple perks for those who pledge, such as exclusive cards depicting popular characters in rare foils. As most trading card games are able to support high financial investment from dedicated players and collectors, the Kickstarter provided many potential tiers, all of which inspired the over 40,000 backers to pledge over $25 million.
Even before the Kickstarter, the game featured various hype material and discussions to get player excited for the game. Among these was a video explaining the basic mechanics of the card game. It revolves around the use of Legend cards which each player will gain three of at the start of the match. From there, players will spend resources in order to performs special actions on cards, call in backup units, or enhance units and legends. Battle is done by spending an attacking unit and comparing each unit’s stats and offensive and defensive trigger abilities. The video also encourages players to experiment with their decks to create unique strategies.
There is large overlap between video game and trading card game players. The immense support for the Cyberpunk TCG hints that the game could have the popularity to reach a large competitive audience. The Kickstarter campaign is set to close later today on April 17th, 2026.
