During the Inside Xbox Live event, fans of the Gears of Wars series were treated to a special first look at the newest trailer regarding the upcoming co-op action-adventure title, Gears 5. The Coalition, the studio behind the game, revealed the worldwide premiere trailer for the highly anticipated Horde Mode.
In the new mode trailer, players can see in-game footage showcasing one of the newer features of Horde Mode: Ultimates. The team wanted to create a more dynamic mode, without cutscenes or story, that could hold the player’s interest over a long period of time. With Ultimates, each character will be given their own special ability that is unique to themselves. Players can arrange and rearrange various combinations of character abilities to best fit their play style.
The big thing for us now is this idea of ultimates. Basically, characters use to be justified by the weapons they carried and you were all the same, you just looked kind of different. But now every character has its own ultimate ability, its own special ability it can bring to the game that changes how you play.
Some of these abilities can be seen in the Horde Mode trailer. For example, JD summons an Airstrike which can be used to blast enemies. Fahz has an X-ray ability and appears to be able to see through barriers and walls. And Kait can use Cloak in order to turn invisible to enemy targets. The studio has also added Jack as a playable character in Horde Mode. The “Jack-of-All-Trades” robotic companion can fly fast, heal, and repair items. You’ll most certainly want him on your team. More characters and abilities are expected to be added to the game in the future.
Along with other features, like health bars over the heads of bosses and mini-bosses, the team has added Taps, small but powerful “energy geysers” scattered around the map. Unlike in the past, where players would usually defend their base from a more fixed standpoint, Taps will encourage players to move around and actively expand their territory in order to gain as much strength and power as possible. Taps are optional, and it is up to the players to decide if their team is up to the task. Every ten waves, after defeating a boss, a new Tap will appear for you to search and capture.
A new campaign trailer for Gears 5 was later revealed during the Gamescom 2019 Opening Night Live event.
The studio mentioned that players can now pre-order the new Xbox One X Gears 5 Limited Edition Bundle. The package includes the Xbox One X Gears 5 Limited Edition 1TB console, the matching Limited Edition “Kait Diaz” Xbox Wireless controller, as well as the Gears 5 Ultimate Edition game download. The bundle will be available to the public starting September 6th.
Gears 5 will be launching on the Xbox One and PC early this fall season. For Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, you can play Gears 5, along with Horde mode and all its new features, four days early on September 6th, 2019. But that’s not all. Players with the Game Pass Ultimate, as well as those who purchase the Gears 5 Ultimate Edition, will receive the special Gears 5 x Halo: Reach crossover character pack.
