Now that E3 2017 has ended many of the smaller developments that were uncovered during the biggest week in gaming are now coming to surface. According to Atari CEO Fred Chesnais the company has a new console in developement. Atari released a video on June 8 that teases the new console. The video doesn’t reveal much and is rather short but it shows images of a product with a wooden finish (similar to the Atari 2600) as well as a white Atari logo that lights up
In an interview with GamesBeat during E3 2017 Chesnais confirmed that they were “back in the hardware business,” and were working on a new console but didn’t reveal much information towards it. The only detail he did reveal during the interview was that the Ataribox is based on PC technology. He also stated that they are still working on the design and will reveal it at a later date.
Many speculated that the video stating a “brand new Atari product years in the making.” was fake since it was seen on a none Atari website. According to Chesnais Atari’s revival is well on it’s way as well. After filing for bankruptcy in 2013, the company is now making profits in the mobile industry.
The last home console Atari had was the Atari Jaguar which released back in 1993 and was later discontinued in 1996. The NES Classic was very popular so Atari may be trying to emulate that in another console themselves. However a new console to compete with next generation hardware is rather unexpected from the company at this point.Anyone interested in the project can sign up for more information on the Atari website.
